Dr. Mark J. Kistler serves as the Dean and Professor in the School of Agriculture and Natural Resources at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. In this role, he is responsible for coordinating administrative decisions in the School; providing leadership to the budget process and allocating resources to three departments, J.G. Woodroof Farm, ABAC Stables, Langdale Forest, and Forest Lakes Golf Club; creating, developing, and utilizing working relationships with industry and alumni to foster recruitment, professional development, and placement of students; coordinating the acquisition of public and private support for the School to enhance programs within the School; creating and encouraging an environment which inspires and appreciates learning at all levels, and identifying and hiring outstanding faculty and staff (and supporting their efforts and professional development).
Prior to coming to ABAC, Dr. Kistler was on faculty at North Carolina State University where he was an Associate Professor in the Department of Agricultural and Human Sciences (2006-2018). At NC State, he served as the Undergraduate Coordinator for the Extension Education curriculum and minor and the Director of Graduate Programs. He previously was on the faculty in the Department of Agricultural Education and Communication at the University of Florida (2004-2006) and the Department of Agricultural Education and Communications at Texas Tech University (2002-2004). Dr. Kistler received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Agriculture in Animal Science from the University of Florida and Ph.D. in Agricultural Education from Texas A&M University. He grew up in the Central Florida town of Winter Haven where he was involved in the beef cattle and citrus industries.
Dr. Kistler has 35 years of professional experience with over 24 years in higher education. He has taught both undergraduate and graduate courses in planning and delivering nonformal education, advanced issues in extension education, introduction to Cooperative Extension, program development and evaluation, methods of technological change, adult education, volunteer management, and research methods, as well as coordinated and supervised the undergraduate Cooperative Extension and industry internship program.
Prior to entering academia, Dr. Kistler worked as an Extension Agent and County Extension Director with the University of Florida Cooperative Extension Service for over 10 years serving in three different counties (Okeechobee, Sarasota, and Hendry). His program responsibilities were primarily in livestock and forage production. In addition, Dr. Kistler has 20 years of state-level experience with the Cooperative Extension Service in three states (Texas, Florida, and North Carolina) where he specialized in program development and evaluation and staff development and training.
Dr. Kistler is a Fellow with the American Association for Agricultural Education. In addition, he is a lifetime member of the North American College and Teachers of Agriculture (NACTA). Dr. Kistler has received numerous awards for his teaching and advising through professional associations and at the college and university-level.
Dr. Kistler and his wife, Danielle, live in Tifton. His hobbies include gardening, traveling, college football, golf, and reading.
