TIFTON—The Golden Stallions of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College captured the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) golf championship at the recent state tournament at Twin City Country Club in Tennille.
ABAC Coach Larry Byrnes was named the GCAA Coach of the Year after his team won the 36-hole multi-divisional tournament by four strokes over Georgia Military College. Andrew College and Emory at Oxford were the other competitors.
“It was a difficult course to play in the wind,” Byrnes said. “Our guys came from behind and got it done. I am very proud of each and every one of them.”
Three ABAC golfers. Hagen Marion from Zebulon, Ben Sanders from Thomasville, and Brady Kotkiewicz from Dacula were named to the All-Region team after finishing in the top five in the tournament. Marion wound up third, Sanders was fourth, and Kotkiewicz was fifth. Other ABAC team members were Bryson Williams from Hazlehurst, and Brock Barber from St. Cloud, Fla.
The Stallions advance to the National Junior College Athletic Association Southeast District Tournament on April 25-26 at The Golf Club in Bristol, Tenn., where they will compete against teams from Maryland, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.
Under Byrnes’ leadership, ABAC has been a participant in the national tournament every year it was held since 2015. There was no tournament in 2020 because of the pandemic.
