High School Equivalency Program (HEP)

The High School Equivalency Program (HEP) is designed to help seasonal farmworkers and their dependents to obtain the equivalent of a high school diploma and, subsequently, to gain employment or begin postsecondary education or vocational training.

Since 1972, HEP has grown to become a nationwide program established in twenty-three different states and Puerto Rico.  Currently, there are fifty-six HEP programs serving thousands of migrant students year-round.

HEP assists in the preparation and successful completion of the General Educational Development (GED) Diploma exams.  HEP also provides placement services for universities, colleges, junior colleges, vocational institutions, military services,  and other post-secondary activities or career positions.  The HEP Academic year runs from August to May each year, with 10-week sessions for residential students or 15-week sessions for commuter students.

The High School Equivalency Program is funded by the US Department of Education, Office of Migrant Education.

Eligibility

To be able to participate in the HEP Program, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be or have been a migrant or seasonal farm worker for at least 75 days in the past 24 months or be the dependent of one.
  • Cannot have a high school diploma or its equivalent.
  • Cannot be currently enrolled in an elementary or high school.
  • Must be at least 17 years of age.
  • Must have at least a 7th grade reading level.
  • Must demonstrate academic and financial need.
