Graduation vs. Commencement

These two words are often used synonymously, but there are key differences.

Graduation Application

A student should apply for graduation one semester prior to their intended graduation date; however, a graduation application can be accepted up until the last day of classes. For a student’s name to be included in the printed Commencement program, their graduation application must be received by:
  • November 1st for Fall Commencement
  • April 1st for Spring Commencement

Ceremony

Commencement includes the Processional, Solo National Anthem, Opening remarks by President, Speaker, Presentation of candidates by Provost, Conferring of degrees, Calling of names with stage presence and photo, Announcement of Alumni Awards, where appropriate, and Recessional.

The livestream of the ceremony can be found at watch.abac.edu 30 minutes prior to the ceremony.

Commencement Stoles and Cords

ABAC recognizes the importance of accessories such as cords, medallions, and stoles in symbolizing academic achievement and the value of acknowledging achievement not only in honor societies but also in recognized college organizations. The stoles and cords that may be worn at commencement ceremonies represent Honor Graduates and Societies, Institutional Organizations, Veterans, Registered Student Organizations, and social Fraternities and Sororities. A complete list of approved stoles and cords is available here.

Request for a Cord or Stole

An ABAC Registered Student Organization or a recognized social fraternity or sorority can find information on how to submit its stole or cord for approval in the Regalia, Stoles, and Cords Policy.

Diplomas and Transcripts

You do not receive your diploma at commencement. Diplomas will be mailed approximately four to six weeks after the ceremony to your mailing address as noted in Banner. To ensure your diploma is directed to the correct address, make sure this address is correct in Banner Web.

You can check your address and accound holds by:

  • Logging into the MyABAC Portal
  • Go to the Banner Student Landing Page
  • Click on Personal Information to review the mailing address
  • Click on Student Profile to view holds

If you need proof of graduation before your diploma is available, please request an official transcript. When submitting your request, select the “Hold for Degree” option.

Participation in commencement does not denote official certification of a degree or certificate. Official certification is only made when all curriculum requirements have been satisfactorily addressed and recorded in the Registrar’s Office.

If you are completing graduation requirements at another institution – to participate in ABAC’s graduation ceremony, the ABAC Registrar’s Office must receive the graduation application one week prior to the graduation ceremony. You must also have the other institution send an official copy of the transcript to ABAC at registrar@abac.edu by the following dates: January 15 for fall, May 30 for spring, and August 15 for summer.
