Mrs. Harrison’s Attendance Policy

As ABAC policy states, “Students whose number of unexcused absences is more than twice the number of class meetings per week (the equivalent of two weeks of instruction) will receive a grade of “F” for the course.”  If these absences occur before midterm, the student may withdraw from the class with a “W “instead of an “F,” but it is the student’s responsibility to initiate the withdrawal process in such time that it is completed by the deadline. (Instructions on how to initiate this process are included below*).

As ABAC policy also states, “Final determination of what constitutes an excused absence rests with the classroom instructor.”  THE ONLY ABSENCES THAT WILL BE EXCUSED IN MY CLASSES ARE THE FOLLOWING:

  1. THE STUDENT HIMSELF OR HERSELF IS ADMITTED INTO THE HOSPITAL, IS IN JAIL, OR IS SUMMONED TO COURT WITH A SUBPOENA.

  1. THE STUDENT’S MINOR CHILD, FOR WHOM THE STUDENT HAS LEGAL RESPONSIBILITY, IS ADMITTED INTO THE HOSPITAL.

The student must provide written documentation of the above circumstances and he or she may assume that I will authenticate such documentation.

This means that if you are absent for any reason besides those noted above, the absence will be unexcused.

Additionally, for legal reasons, students may not bring children to class.  This means that a minor child may not be stationed outside the classroom or anywhere on campus unless attended at all times by an adult.

If a student is tardy to a class three times, this constitutes an unexcused absence.  THERE ARE NO EXCUSED TARDIES.  A student is tardy who arrives after class begins.  A student who misses more than half the class is considered absent, not tardy.

*The deadline this semester, fall 2005, for withdrawing from a full-session class with a “W” is October 13.  The deadline for withdrawing from a session A class with a “W” (ABAC 1000 is a session A class) is September 16.  The process for withdrawing from a class, as stated in the ABAC catalog on page 78 is as follows:  “The student who wants to withdraw from a course must first see his/her academic advisor for permission to withdraw.  At that point the advisor completes a drop form and the student follows the steps outlined on the form and submits it to the Enrollment Services Office.”
