Course Goals
Purpose of Course:
The purpose of this course is to help the student identify weaknesses that
are causing him/her to be unsuccessful on the Regents' Exam and to provide
instruction in areas that will correct such weaknesses.
To take the Regents' Test on March 9,10, or 11, the student must maintain a
passing average of 70 in the class. In addition, the student must complete
practice reading tests, a lab component, and three timed tests in class
during the semester to demonstrate readiness for the actual Regents' test. To
pass RGTR 0198 the student must pass the Regents' Exam. If he/she passes the
exam, a grade of "S" will be assigned. If a student
takes the Regents' test but does not pass it, a grade of "U"
will be assigned.
If the student is not cleared to
take the exam because he/she does not have a 70 average or because of lack of
attendance, the grade
of "U" will be assigned. The class will be completed the day
of the Regents' test. All students who do not pass the Regents' test must
retake this class before taking the Regents' test again. A score of 61 is
required to pass the test.
Class Instructions:
The instructors of this course will use an eclectic approach to help students
achieve maximum improvement in their reading abilities and to be better
prepared to take the Regents' test. The computer lab with many reading
programs is available for lab assignments and may also be used independently.
Attendance:
Students are expected to attend all scheduled classes and labs. Roll will be
taken daily. Students who are tardy or who leave class early will not be
allowed to make up work done before they arrived or after they left
class. Students whose number of
absences exceeds twice the number of class meetings per week will
receive a grade of "U" for the course. For this class, that means
four absences.
Classwork and homework should be handed in on time. Homework is due at the
beginning of the period. If you are absent, homework must be turned in the
day you return. Pop tests and readings given during the first part of class
may not be taken at the end of class or made up later if you are tardy.
No food or drink is allowed in the labs. Drinks may be brought to regular
class sessions but not food, candy, chips or the like. Drinks only!!!!!
Students listening to music, using computers or cell phones other than for
assignments, or coming to class without textbooks or pencils, are not
prepared to participate in class and will receive a participation grade of 0
for that day. Cell phones should be turned off and placed out of sight.
Grading policy:
A student must have a 70 average in this class to be eligible to take the
Regents' Test.
Extended time:
Extended time up to double time may be given to any student who qualifies.
The instructor will verify this.
Each student is expected to have his/her own book. The book that we use is
designed as a workbook and will be used in that way. Bring your book with you
to every class unless you are instructed not to bring it. If you come to
class without book or pencil, you will be considered "Unprepared"
and will receive a participation grade of 0 for the day.
