Study Abroad - Passports

Passport
ABAC strongly recommends that you apply for a passport NOW if you do not already have one. You cannot obtain your student visa (the document that allows you to reside legally in your host country) until you have a passport. It can take up to two months to get a passport in addition to another two months for a visa in some cases. Do not wait until the last minute!

If you are over 16, then your passport will be good for ten years, so you can continue traveling after your study abroad experience with ABAC. If you already have a passport, check the expiration date. If you were under 16 when you got it, then it is only valid for five years.

Before you apply, you will need:

  1. A completed passport application. This can be obtained at a post office or online at www.travel.state.gov
  2. Proof of U.S. citizenship, such as your original birth certificate. If you do not possess an original copy, check with your family. If they don't have a copy, you will probably need to write to the county where you were born.
  3. Two recent identical 2 inch by 2 inch passport photos. These can be obtained at many local businesses, including Wal-Mart.
  4. Proof of identity, such as a valid driver's license.

To apply, go to one of the following.

  • Tift County Courthouse
    225 Tift Avenue North Tifton
    Phone: 229-386-7940
  • A state or county courthouse near your home. You will need to make an appointment in advance.
Once you have your passport, make a copy of the picture page and take it with you. Keep this copy in a separate place than where you store your passport, since it aids in recovering stolen or lost passports. We also advise you to keep a copy of your passport with your parents back home, or someone you can call upon in case of an emergency.
  • Visas
A student visa is a permit issued by the host country granting you permission to study and live for a specific amount of time in the country. It is the student’s responsibility to check into visa application requirements. Different countries can have different requirements for student visas. The same country may even have different requirements for students of different states. Look into visa requirements early and apply as soon as you are accepted into a program. Do not rely on other people who have been to the country to tell you whether or not you need a visa. Some countries do not require visas for tourists, but do require them for students or people planning to stay longer than 3 months. ABAC cannot be held responsible for missed deadlines and failed applications; we are, however, willing to help you as much as we can through the process. Visit www.embasy.org or www.travel.state.gov for more information about visa applications.
