Our nation has asserted a commitment to providing educational opportunities for all Americans, regardless of race, ethnic background or economic circumstance. In support of this commitment, Congress established a series of programs to help disadvantaged Americans enter college, graduate and move on to participate more fully in America's economic and community life. These Programs are funded under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 and are referred to as the TRIO Programs (initially just three programs). While student financial aid programs help students overcome financial barriers to higher education, TRIO programs help students overcome class, social and cultural barriers to higher education. As one of several TRIO Programs funded to operate on the campus of Abraham Baldwin College, Student Support Services has been helping students at ABAC since 1972. Student Support Services helps low-income, first generation, and/or learning disabled students to stay in college until they earn their baccalaureate degrees. The SSS program here at ABAC offers one-on-one tutoring, supplemental instruction in high-risk courses, career and/or academic guidance, and workshops each semester on a variety of topics, including Transferring Tips and Test Anxiety. We also try to offer at least one cultural trip per semester, which have in the past included seeing a comedian perform in Valdosta, a musical play at FAMU, and choral performances in Albany. Campus visits to University System institutions are also regularly scheduled. We keep records from multiple sources on our students, to track successes and identify problem areas before they get out of hand.
