Great
teachers will always be in demand. Many great teachers in
educational systems throughout the country earned their first two
years of college credit at Abraham Baldwin. Now it’s your turn.
Major in early childhood, middle grades, or P-12 (special education,
art, foreign language, or music) education; then transfer those
credits to a senior college or university to complete your
bachelor’s degree. Students wishing to teach at the high school
level will major in the discipline they plan to teach and may also
enroll in education courses that will count toward their teacher
certification.
Other
majors you might pursue for the first two years of a bachelor’s
degree include criminal justice, human services (social
work), history, political science, psychology, and
sociology.
Criminal
justice also features a two-year program with a law enforcement
option. Mid-level and supervisory positions as law enforcement or
probation officers can be the result. The division also houses the
Regional Police Academy of Southwest Georgia where law enforcement
personnel receive training in modern techniques.
You might
choose the history major as preparation for a career in journalism,
business, law, or theology. Law is also a career choice for
political science majors who can aim for positions in politics,
foreign policy, and public administration.
Human
services technology provides a two-year degree with options in
children and family services and social and legal services.
Graduates work with the elderly, children, the disabled, or other
groups in social work agencies. Taking the first two years of a
four-year degree in human services may elevate you to a better
position in a shorter period of time.
Psychology
majors learn to identify people who need care and guidance.
Specialized careers may include experimental psychology, behavioral
research, clinical psychology, and counseling psychology.
