Principles of Biology I (BIOL 2107-5/CRN=20 30559)

Acknowledging the = fact that=20 exposure to any mass of knowledge is prerequisite to learning that = knowledge,=20 regular attendance is required for successful completion of the = course=20 requirements. Instruction = and=20 information within the classroom is unique and is generally difficult to = obtain=20 and/or unavailable outside of the classroom in original form. Therefore, regular attendance = will=20 ensure that students receive the most appropriate instruction and timely = information regarding any course modifications, announcements, etc. It is the student=92s = responsibility to=20 contact the instructor prior to any anticipated absence or immediately = after = an=20 unanticipated one (during the next regularly scheduled class which the = student=20 attends). The = instructor will=20 read the class roll or circulate a sign-in sheet at the beginning of = class. Any student arriving after the = class=20 roll has been recorded will be marked absent. In addition, any student who = misses more=20 than six classes may receive a final class grade of =93F.=94 Students who miss more than = six classes=20 may withdraw from the class without penalty prior to the drop without = penalty=20 date (March 2, = 2011).

IV. =20 Withdrawals/Dropping Class

The last day that a student may withdraw from a = course=20 without penalty is March 2, = 2011. After this = date, a=20 student withdrawing from class will receive a WF. V. =20 Academic Dishonesty

Part A/Instructor = Approval=20 (50 pts.)

Each student will = select a=20 specific vertebrate = animal (a=20 wild species native to Georgia) and will submit the associated = classification=20 scheme (common name, domain, kingdom, phylum/division, class, order, = family,=20 genus and species). All = taxonomic=20 names must be properly written to receive full credit. Topics will be approved = on a first=20 come, first served basis and no two students may select the same topic = (a list=20 will be maintained by the instructor). =20 Part A must be typed using a double-space = format.

Part B/Completed = Report (100=20 pts.)

Each report = must=20 include a detailed description of five specific ecological = niches=20 (numbered one through five) associated with the selected organism. In order to receive full = credit, each=20 description must be specific, detailed and clearly demonstrate how what = you are=20 describing is an ecological niche. =20 Part B must be typed using a double-space = format.

Part A and/or Part = B may be=20 submitted prior to the above dates and times. Neither Part A nor Part B will = be=20 accepted after the assigned date and time. =20 A grade of =93zero=94 will be recorded for either part of the = assignment that=20 is submitted late. =20

exceed 10% of the final = course=20 grade).

Notes:

2. &nbs= p;=20 Pop quizzes must be completed during the time allocated by the=20 instructor. Any student = arriving=20 late will only have the time remaining to complete his or her quiz and = no=20 quizzes may be taken after the allotted time = period.

3. =20 In the event that a student=92s final class percentage is close = to but=20 falls short of the next highest grade category, the instructor will = consider=20 such factors as classroom and/or laboratory attendance, classroom and/or = laboratory preparation and participation, satisfactory completion of all = laboratory exercises, etc. in determining the final class grade. A student=92s final = letter grade=20 will only be elevated if his or her final class percentage is within one = point=20 of the next highest grade category.

4. &nbs= p;=20 Make-up examinations will not be given. Any student who misses an = examination=20 should notify the instructor prior to the next regularly scheduled class = which=20 he or she attends. If the = student=20 has an appropriate reason for missing the examination, then he or she = will be=20 allowed to substitute the percentage score on the final examination for = the=20 missed examination. The=20 comprehensive/cumulative final examination must be taken by each student = in=20 order to receive full credit for the course. Substitution will = only be=20 allowed for one missed examination.
