Lesson Plan

Class: 8th Grade; Math, Pre-Algebra; Solving Algebraic Equations

Duration: 45 Minutes

Georgia Performance Standards:

M841: Students will use algebra to represent, analyze, and solve problems.

  1. Represent a given situation using algebraic expressions or equations in one variable.
  2. Simplify and evaluate algebraic expressions.
  3. Sole algebraic equations in one variable, including equations involving absolute values.
  4. Solve equations involving several variables for one variable in terms of the others.
  5. Interpret solutions in problem contexts.

Objectives:

Students will:

-Identify specific math signs previously used. (Knowledge)

-Discuss the proper way to work algebraic equations using one variable. (Comprehension)

-Show how to solve problems and how to apply previous information. (Knowledge)

-Demonstrate proper steps to solving an algebraic equation.  (Application)

Materials:

-text book

-notebook/paper

-pencil

-calculator (if needed)

Accommodations: I will work one on one with a student having ADHD. Their worksheet will be broken down into a smaller number of problems. Once the student masters each problem, I will assign an increasingly more difficult problem.

Procedures:

-The teacher will ask the students to take out homework that was previously assigned that’s due on this specific day (Introduction and Review)

-The teacher will assign a Daily Oral Math (DOM), and then solve problems with students. (Introduction and Review)

-While students are working on DOM, teacher will take up homework. (Introduction)

-The teacher will discuss what will be taught in the class that day. (Introduction and Review)

-The teacher will review information from previous class that is needed for new material. (Introduction and Review)

-The teacher will write on the board new definitions for the lesson and also identifying important points given in the text book. (Developing Understanding)

-The teacher then will write problems out and discuss each step for the problem so that the students understand the process. Ex: 4x + 10 = -6 (Developing Understanding) (Aural)

-The teacher will ask if there are any questions, if so explain to that student. (Developing Understanding)

- Once the teacher has given numerous amounts of examples, she then will write a problem and ask the students to call out the next step until the problem is solved. (Guided Practice)

-The teacher will assign problems out of the text book for the class to try on their own. (Guided Practice)

-Once the students have completed the problems the teacher will then let the students volunteer to solve assigned problems on the board. (Guided Practice) (Read/Write)

-After each problem review steps the student used and check to see if correct, answer any questions as needed. (Guided Practice)

-The teacher will then hand out worksheets that will need to be completed in class. (Independent Practice)

-After every student has received and completed the worksheet, the teacher will go over the answers. The teacher will then assign homework due the next day of class. (Closure)

Assessment:

-The DOM done at the beginning of class will be taken as a quiz grade since it is review from last class.

-The worksheet and homework assignments will be graded for correctness.
