Discover:
Discover is probably one of the most
comprehensive, computer-assisted career information and planning system.
It is designed to help students with:
Individualized Career Planning:
Students may identify their interests, abilities, and work-related values in
order to choose relevant occupations and
educational opportunities.
Direct access to occupational and
educational searches and/or information. Students may explore or directly
access occupations,
schools, financial aid, job preparation information, and more.
Career/Personal Counseling:
The Student Development Center
staff are qualified providers of personal and career counseling, diagnostic
services, and
mental health education. The Center follows confidentiality guidelines set
by the American Psychological Association, the
American Counseling Association, and the International Association of Counseling
Services.
We offer career tests to aid in
counseling each student. There are also two computer-assisted career
services programs available
for students -- DISCOVER and GCIS (Georgia Career and Information System).
Career Success Checklist:
*Locate
and explore the Career Counseling Center.
*Begin
an assessment of personal interests and skills.
*Explore
various majors that interest you.
*Explore
career opportunities related to your areas of academic interest.
*Choose
a major or re-evaluate your present choice.
*Consider
career-related activities (e.g., summer employment, part-time work, volunteer
jobs, student organizations) to help you
explore beyond the academic environment.
*Interview
people who are in fields you think you would like (Information Interview)
*If
graduate school is an option, take entrance exams, (GRE, GMAT, MAT, LSAT, etc.)
and start the application process.
*Inventory
skills and abilities that you have developed appropriate to the world of work.
*Check
on the campus recruitment schedule.
*Initiate
a job search with the Job Placement Center; identify potential employers,
research employers and companies, network,
develop or refine resume, and interview.
GCIS (Georgia Career Information System)
GCIS is a computer-assisted
library of occupational education information. It can be used in the
career decision-making
process. GCIS is the state career information system of Georgia, but also
includes national information such as occupations,
financial aid, schools, major industries, job information, and more.
