Internship Opportunities:

Governor’s Internship Program

The Governor’s Intern Program is looking for bright, hardworking and enthusiastic people to intern at the State Capitol during Fall 2009. Interns work in a fast-paced environment and enjoy many opportunities to learn more about politics, state government and the legislative process.

Each intern is assigned to a department within the Governor’s Office or a state agency based on his or her interests. Potential placements include Policy, Communications, Scheduling, Government Affairs, Executive Appointments, Executive Counsel and Constituent Services.

The application process is highly competitive, consisting of an online application and two rounds of interviews. Applicants may be college juniors or seniors, recent graduates, graduate students or law students. All majors are encouraged to apply and interns will receive an hourly stipend based upon their education level. Interns are required to work 20 to 40 hours per week and will begin on August 17^th.

Governor’s Fellowship Program

Applications are also being accepted for fellows in the Governor’s Intern Program. Fellows must be recent college graduates and have the ability to work 40 hours a week for six months. Like interns, fellows are placed in a specific department based on academic and career interests, but the longer tenure allows them to work on and develop certain long-term projects within a department and build a foundation for a career in state government or politics. Fellows receive a stipend of $10/hour.

The next fellowship period is December 18, 2009 – June 18, 2010. The fellowship application process is highly competitive and consists of an application, first-round interview and second-round panel interview.

Spring/summer internships are available at the Arnold Arboretum. The Arboretum is a 265-acre historic public landscape and respected research institution situated in the vibrant neighborhoods of Boston, Massachusetts. The internships offer practical hands-on training in landscape horticulture combined with related classroom instruction. Interns are accepted for 12 - 24-week appointments in the Living Collections department: 10 with grounds maintenance and 2 with the greenhouse and nursery. Carolina Trace Country Club is a 36-hole private club located in Sanford NC. Both courses have 419 Bermuda fairways, tees and rough. Job requirements will include working closely with the Superintendent an Assistant Superintendents to monitor the golf course daily as well training and managing staff. Gaston Country Club is an 18-hole private facility. Our club was established in 1919 and has been located at the current site since 1958. The golf course is an original Ellis Maples design with a restoration finished in 2004 by Kris Spence. We are ranked in the top 50 golf courses in North Carolina. We have A-4 Bentgrass greens and 419 Bermuda on all tees, fairways and surrounds. Candidates should have a turf-degree and be able to obtain a North Carolina pesticide license within 6 months. The Hasentree Club is a new private Tom Fazio designed course that recently opened in October of 2007. Agronomic specifics include; A-4 Bentgrass greens, Tif Sport Bermuda tees, fairways, and rough. Some Meyer and Cavalier Zoysia are used on a few tees and rough areas. The irrigation and pumping system is Rain Bird. The golf course is also an Audubon Gold Signature Sanctuary. The candidate requirements include a 2 or 4 year degree in Turfgrass management and the ability to obtain a NC pesticide license within 90 days. The candidate should be willing to work the necessary hours, be a team player, and have good communication skills. The Hasentree Club provides a high attention to detail and exceeds member expectations. Job responsibilities will include pesticide and fertilizer applications and crew and project supervision including running a weekend crew.
