Procedure for Accommodations Outside of the Classroom
Procedure for Disability-Related Absences and Extensions
Professor/Instructor Information:
1. At the beginning of the semester, a student who is eligible for disability-related absences or extensions will meet each professor or instructor to present a letter from Ms. Annie Sims. Students are responsible for explaining to professors or instructors exactly what their needs are related to specific classes.
1. Disability-related absences and extensions are recommended by the Student Development Center for students who have chronic physical and psychological conditions. These accommodations are based on appropriate, current and approved documentation for a specific disability.
2. When the Student Development Center recommends disability-related absences or extensions, we are asking professors or instructors to allow some flexibility in standard attendance requirements due to a student’s verifiable disability.
3. While ABAC requests that professors and instructors consider the impact of a student’s disability and how it may limit class attendance on occasion, it is up to each professor or instructor to decide how long a reasonable extension should be in a particular class.
4. The Student Development Center holds students responsible for keeping their health status. We also recommend that professors and instructors request verification after each absence. It is the student’s responsibility to provide their professor or instructors with verification from their health practitioner. Again, it is up to each professor or instructor to decide how long a reasonable extension should be in a particular class.
1. Students need to meet with professors or instructors to provide letters from the Student Development Center outlining their need for disability-related absences or extensions.
2. Students should discuss their specific disability related needs for the class with the professor or instructor.
3. Students should keep professors or instructors and health practitioners informed as to their current health status.
4. Students need to provide verification from health practitioners for professors or instructors when requested.
