How and when can I expect to hear if I've received a scholarship or not?
Letters are sent, via US Mail, to those persons who turned in a complete application form and all supporting materials. You will receive a letter whether you are awarded a scholarship or not.
If you will be an incoming Freshman for fall, and are awarded a scholarship, you should receive a letter by mid to late April.
If you are a current/returning student, you should hear from us by mid to late May.
I have a 4.0 GPA/1600 SAT. I’ll automatically get a scholarship, right?
Scholarships are not merely awarded based on GPA or SAT scores. Some are awarded to outstanding students in a specific major; some are aimed at helping students from a certain city, school or county; some are awarded based on participation in clubs and activities; some are aimed at assisting those with specific financial needs; and some are made on the recommendation of specific School faculty. The people who provide the money for these scholarships are the ones who set up criteria for awarding them, the committee merely sees that the best match is made.
Do I need to fill out an application for each ABAC Foundation scholarship I'm interested in?
No - you fill out one application, and the committee will consider you for all the scholarships you qualify for.
Do I have to be admitted to ABAC before I apply for a scholarship?
No, but you should intend to come to ABAC in the year (Fall and Spring Semesters) that you indicate on your application. Application for admission does not apply you for scholarships, you should not wait until you have been accepted to ABAC to apply for scholarships.
Your funds will be available in your Financial Aid account at the beginning of each semester, and can be used from there to pay tuition, and to pay for books and supplies in the bookstore (with your ABAC Gold Card). If you have any funds remaining, excess checks are usually released mid-way through the semester.
Please note: Your scholarship will generally be split between Fall and Spring semesters. For example, if you receive a $1000 scholarship, you will receive $500 in the Fall, and $500 in the Spring.
Are there any other scholarships I can apply for?
Yes - a list of additional scholarship opportunities for ABAC students can be found here. Read their criteria carefully, and be sure to note that they may have different deadlines.
What do I turn in with my application?
As listed on the application form, 2 letters of recommendation, a brief autobiographical essay, and a Leadership and Activity record should be submitted with your printed and signed application form. Be sure the persons you asked to send letters of recommendation directly to us to get them here in a timely fashion, your application will not be considered complete until all parts have been recieved.
Do I need to print the application after I've filled it out?
Yes. For your application to be considered complete, a signed paper copy, in addition to your leadership activities, your essay and letters of recommendation, must be received in the Office of Academic Affairs, located on the second floor of the Branch Student Center.
You should write to answer the questions indicated on the application form, ie. why you chose to enroll at ABAC, and why you are applying for this scholarship. A well-written essay will address these questions while also giving the scholarship committee a little insight into who you are beyond your academic transcript. Additional essay hints can be found here.
Who do I get letters of recommendation from?
A former employer, a current or former (high school or college) instructor, members of your local community who have worked with you (church, volunteer organizations, etc.), or any other source other than immediate family. See more information about asking instructors for recommendation letters.
What is a Leadership and Activity record?
A Leadership and Activity record should include a listing of clubs or organizations you have been involved in, and leadership positions you served in while active in these organizations. Volunteer work, church activities, or participation in local non-profit efforts would also be included in this list.
