Current Students Requesting Letters of Recommendation

(for scholarships, or any other purpose)

If you plan to ask a professor to write a letter of recommendation for you, be prepared to provide your request in writing.  Otherwise, the professor will not be able to honor your request due to the federal law entitled FERPA, which provides for your privacy as a student.

Important points you should include in your written request:

  • Indicate to whom the recommendation letter should be addressed.

  • State the purpose for the recommendation (i.e., scholarship application, employment application, etc.)

  • Clearly detail information that may be shared (i.e., GPA, grades, attendance, class participation, etc).

  • State whether or not you waive your right to review a copy of the letter.

Sign and date your letter.
