Internship - Downtown Tifton Farmers’ Market in Tifton, GA

This position involved creating and maintaining a blog of helpful information about the market, on-site hosting and occasional management of the market, andhelping with publicity of the market. Entries on the Market Morsels blog (hosted by Word Press) contain information on growing locally popular products (tomatoes, peaches), home canning methods, and vendor profiles, in addition to general information about the market and planting and harvesting schedules for South Georgia.

Learning about how even rural populations have a hard time gaining access to locally produced fresh food was an eye-opening experience. Witnessing the community building that takes place and the people of diverse backgrounds finding common ground when talking about growing and preparing their own food (or bonding over crafts, or sewing) was the best aspect being on-site with the market. Going to a farmer’s home and listening to the love they have of growing and caring for the crops they produce, and the curiosity they have for trying new methods that might allow them to grow chemical-free crops was also a wonderful experience.
