Rural Studies - Sample of Course Projects
Rural Studies Students Focus on Telfair County
Fall semester students in the Introduction to Rural Studies class identified Telfair County in southeast Georgia to use as a learning laboratory to put academic studies into practical application. Students traveled to Telfair to meet with community leaders in government, cultural and historical associations, recreation, and community service organizations. After several weeks of research, interviews, and local investigation, students targeted 3 areas on which to focus their efforts to create solution-oriented projects to contribute to economic and lifestyle development in Telfair County. Groups of students
- developed extensive plans for completing renovation and identifying programming for an historic auditorium
- developed a tourism brochure template that included voluminous information to promote 3 major recreational waterways in the county,
- developed an extensive notebook devoted to grants information, application forms, and a template for grants that focus on redevelopment projects in rural areas
- created sample survey documents that would target specific groups to solicit input about projects to meet their needs or fit their desires.
