Fall 2011 Events

ABAC Move-In Day- Wednesday, August 10th
The final Orientation Day (formerly titled Advising and Registration Days) for the Fall 2011 semester is August 9th.  For students attending this final orientation session, they are allowed to move-in after the day is complete.  All other new ABAC students move in on the following day, August 10th.  Maybe you’ve accompanied one of your children to college as he/she moved away from home for the first time.  Although it can be both exciting and a bit scary for the students, parents/guardians are overwhelmed, exhausted and can even be a little sad.  Come help the Housing staff as they welcome new students and help families moving students in.  Not great at lifting boxes?  There’s a job for everyone, from checking people in to handing out water to directing traffic.  This is a great opportunity to help ABAC students in a tangible and fun way.  For information on volunteering, contact Dean Hughes (bhughes@abac.edu).

Welcome Week- August 11th-August 14th
It has been proven that students involved in extracurricular activities have a higher success rate in college than those not involved in campus life.  Welcome Week at ABAC kicks off the campus life events for the fall semester.  Faculty members can help retain students by becoming a part of the ABAC community, supporting and helping with such events that promote campus involvement.  Rarely can a student see their professor getting dunked in a dunk tank or running down a bow up slip and slide.  However, faculty can partake in all kinds of activities during Welcome Week.  Beyond attending the events, faculty can help Kris Liebegott as he plans, coordinates and manages this very busy week.  Contact kliebegott@abac.edu to volunteer. Go to the Welcome Week website in May (www.abac.edu/welcomeweek) to see a full schedule of events.  Have fun and help retain students!

Family Weekend, October 7 and 8th
In the fall of 2010, ABAC hosted its first ever Family Weekend.  The event was a huge success, with crowds ranging from 250 to 300 at the weekend’s various events.  The Family Weekend Committee would like to invite faculty and staff, along with their families, to the October event.  Rather than helping with this event, we want you to be guests for the 2nd annual Family Weekend.  Many students and professors only interact with each other in the classroom, but seeing students with their families is an eye-opening experience.  Events during Family Weekend include an outdoor movie, alumni-sponsored cookout and an evening of music and bbq at the Museum of Agriculture.  *Participation certificates are printed for faculty portfolios.

House Calls-Tuesday, August 30th 5:30-9:00 pm
You see them in class; you see them across campus; you see them in the dining hall, but have you ever seen your students in their home?  House Calls allow professors to get an up close and personal view of their students’ lives outside of the classroom.  Many students get lost in the mix of college life because they are used to more proactive attention from high school teachers.  During this late August/early September event, staff, student leaders and faculty stop by dorm rooms to see if residents need anything.  Students may feel lost at ABAC, but house calls show them that there are people that care about their future at ABAC.  Whether it’s stopping by with a tasty treat or even asking about any problems in the residence hall, this is a great opportunity to help your students in a very real and immediate way.  For volunteering information contact Dean Hughes (bhughes@abac.edu)

Fall 2011 Stallion Day, November 12th
Helping in some aspect of open-campus days allows for faculty to get a glimpse of the new group of ABAC Stallions coming in the upcoming semester.  Prospective students and families visit the ABAC campus, trying to get a better feel for the environment.  What better way to impress potential students and families than with our outstanding faculty members?  You could have the opportunity to teach an interactive class, a brief sample of an engaging class ABAC has to offer.  Stallion Days are held throughout the semester, so if one day doesn’t work for you, there’s probably another one right around the corner.  To volunteer during Stallion Days, please contact Brooke Jernigan in Admissions (bjernigan@abac.edu).
