Fillies Soccer Team Opens Home Schedule Today

TIFTONThe undefeated women’s soccer team at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College opens its home season today at 4 p.m. against South Georgia College.

Coach Jimmy Ballenger’s Fillies have already knocked off Judson College 12-0 and Georgia Perimeter College 2-1 in road matches.

“Even though this team is relatively inexperienced, the players feel this year could be the best team we have had in the three years of the soccer program,” Ballenger said.  “We expect to compete for the state title.”

The 2007 version of Fillies soccer finished 9-6-1.  Ballenger said the team played solid defense but had problems scoring.  Four players from England should pump up the offensive totals for the team this year.

“We have signed four players from England,” Ballenger said.  “Three are from Coventry, and one is from London.”

Joanne Ryan, Sanjeet Jaspal, and Abbie Strong are from Coventry, and Katrina Duncan-Marshalleck is from London.

Ballenger expects Young Harris to be the preseason favorite in the Georgia Junior College Athletic Association with Darton close behind.

“We really think that each year we move closer and closer to the top,” Ballenger said.  “I’d like to encourage everyone to come out and watch us this year.”
