Colquitt County HONOR Graduate Chooses ABAC

TIFTONThe salutatorian for the Class of 2008 at Colquitt County High School will receive a full tuition scholarship this fall through the ABAC Foundation Scholars program at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.

Salutatorian Stephen Tyus will receive the scholarship which covers all tuition and fees for two semesters.

The ABAC Foundation makes available on an annual basis full tuition scholarships to three of the top five graduates from high schools in Tift County, Colquitt County, Worth County, Cook County, Turner County, Irwin County, Fitzgerald, Berrien County, and Tiftarea Academy.

“Students of this academic caliber could choose to go to a variety of different colleges,” ABAC President David Bridges said.  “For them to select ABAC is just another reason why we are fast becoming Georgia’s State College of choice.”

Betty McCorvey from the ABAC College Advancement Office said the scholarships are funded from proceeds from the Dollars for ABAC Scholars event.  She said that annual fundraising event for the college has been moved to the fall this year from its usual spring date.

Tyus has been a member of the National Honors Society, Jazz Band, Key Club, and the CCHS tennis and baseball teams. He served as trumpet captain of the 50th Regiment Marching band and received Master Musician for levels one through three.  Tyus received the Excellence in Algebra II, Geometry, and Advanced Algebra and Trigonometry awards.  He was also named to the Scholastic Honor Roll and received a Georgia Certificate of Merit.

The application deadline for the fall semester at ABAC is Aug. 5.  Classes begin Aug. 18.
