Welcome
Week Activities for 1,000 Freshmen Begin At ABAC
TIFTON
- Welcome Week activities for over 1,000 freshmen began at Abraham Baldwin
Agricultural College on Wednesday with what ABAC Director of Student Success
Don Parks called "the world's biggest meet-and-greet."
Parks said all the freshmen got to
know each other during a meet-and-greet time on the Gressette Gym floor called
"Playfair."
"Playfair is more than just an
entertainment event," Parks said.
"It is a team-building experience that has a long lasting effect on
the members of your campus community."
Other events during the five-day
Welcome Week include intensive sessions on "Real Life 101" which
explains the differences between going to high school and going to college,
"How to Graduate on Time," and "It's All About Time,"
a session on time management for college
students.
Local businesses will interact with
the students today at the "Town-Gown Connection" dinner on The
Meadows, and an ABAC Lakeside Block Party is set for tonight.
ABAC President David Bridges will be
the keynote speaker at the annual Fall Convocation on Friday at 11 a.m. in
Gressette Gym. Bridges, a former ABAC
student himself, will talk about "Character, Community, and
Competence." He will host a picnic
for all the students after the session at the ABAC Lakeside student housing
complex.
History of ABAC sessions, a scavenger
hunt, an ice cream social, a talent show, and a student-led non-denominational
worship service highlight the weekend activities. Dean of Students Bernice Hughes said a big
part of Saturday will also be spent doing community service activities in
various locations around Tifton.
"It's important for these
students to give back to the Tifton community which supports them," Hughes
said.
Fall semester classes begin at ABAC
on Aug. 18.
