GEORGE SCOTT DAY, JAZZ FESTIVAL AT ABAC APRIL 22

TIFTON – George Scott Day, an annual Celebration of the Arts, and the 29th annual ABAC Jazz Festival will take place on April 22 on the campus of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.

The event, sponsored by the Humanities Division and the ABAC Music Department, is held each year as a tribute to George Scott, an associate professor of English at ABAC, who passed away in 1994.

The George Scott Day festivities will kick off at 10 a.m. with the Pegasus poetry readings in room 211 of the Music Building. Short story and poetry readings by ABAC faculty and staff will begin at 11:15 a.m. in the same room. An ABAC art exhibit featuring students’ artwork will be displayed on the front lawn of the ABAC campus from11 a.m. until 4 p.m.

The 38th Annual Lew Akin Speech Showcase will be held on the third floor of Conger Hall from 5-7 p.m.

  The Jazz Festival will take place on the front lawn of the ABAC campus from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.  The festival will feature bands from area high schools including the Tift County High School Jazz Ensemble at 10:30 a.m.; Crisp County High School at 11 a.m.;  Northside High School at 11:30 a.m., Valdosta High School Jazz Ensemble at noon; Appling County High School Jazz Ensemble at 12:30 p.m.; and Lanier County High School Jazz Ensemble at 1 p.m.

 Other schools performing will include Lee County High School at 1:30 p.m.; Henry County High School at 2 p.m.; Thomas County Central High School Jazz Ensemble 2:30 p.m.; Lowndes High School Jazz Ensemble at 3 p.m.; and ABAC Jazz Ensemble at 3:30 p.m.

Kevin Mahogany, a premier male jazz singer of the baby boom generation, will hold a jazz clinic in Driggers Lecture Hall at 4:15 p.m. He will also perform at the UGA Tifton Campus Conference center at 7 p.m. The concert is free to ABAC students, adult tickets are $15, and student tickets are $10.

The ABAC jazz choir will perform with the Irwin County and Worth County jazz choirs  in the Donaldson Dining Hall at 5 p.m.

Lunch will be served for $6 from 11:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. on ABAC’s front lawn, or you may bring your own lunch.  For additional information or details concerning the schedule for George Scott Day or the Jazz Festival, please call 229-391-4942.  In case of rain, the Jazz Festival activities will take place in the Donaldson Dining Hall at ABAC.
