Ty Wright

DUBLIN PLAYER SWINGING BIG BAT FOR ABAC

TIFTON – Not many baseball players ever hit two grand slams in a career.  Ty Wright  of the Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College Stallions has already hit two in one game this season.  The sophomore biology major from Dublin hit two grand slams against George Wallace Community College.

“I am doing well in all offensive categories of my game,” Wright said. “My season is going well - even better than I thought it would.”

That is an understatement. Wright is the team leader offensively. His batting average is 407 with 49 runs scored. This is a vast improvement from last season’s batting average of 314. He also holds the season record with his 83 hits, 19 doubles, eight homeruns and 48 runs batted in.

He was just selected as both an All-Conference Player and named as the All-Conference Player of the Year.

“Ty is a great kid and has been from the start,” said Stallions’ head coach Steve Janousek. “He works hard in the classroom and on the field.”

The first baseman for the Stallions started playing baseball at the age of five years old.

“My family members - especially my dad - played a lot,” Wright said. “I played a variety of positions on teams when I was younger. I don’t have a favorite.  I like playing all of them.”

After graduating from West Laurens High School, Wright received a baseball scholarship to play for the Golden Stallions.

“I chose ABAC because I like the small class sizes, and you get to know your instructors,” Wright said. “I also knew I would be able to get playing time on the team.”

Another aspect that Wright found appealing was the community of Tifton. “It reminds me a lot of Dublin,” Wright said. “It’s a good fit for me.”

Upon graduation from ABAC this summer, Wright plans to attend either Georgia Southern or Valdosta State University in the fall of 2007 and continue to play baseball.

“He will be sorely missed,” said Janousek. “He is the kind of kid that, as coaches, we love to work with.”

Wright then hopes to go to the Medical College of Georgia or Emory University to become a physician’s assistant.

In ten years, Wright hopes to be following one of two different career paths. “Hopefully I am playing professional baseball,” he said. “I would love to play for the Atlanta Braves so I can still be close to family and friends. If not, I hope to be working for a hospital, married, and living comfortably.”
