Athletics Director Alan Kramer said the soccer field complex actually includes the intercollegiate soccer field, a multi-purpose field which can be used for a practice field, and an intramural softball field. He and ABAC Soccer Coach Jimmy Ballenger have kept a close eye on the progress of the field since construction began on Nov. 30, 2006.
“This project benefits not only the women’s soccer team but also the student body,” Kramer said. “Students will have more options for activities on campus with the addition of the intramural field. The field will help to recruit new students while retaining our current students.”
Ballenger is anxious for Tuesday’s first action on the brilliant green turf of the new field.
“We’re very proud of our new field, and we can’t wait to get started,” Ballenger said. “We had great support from our fans last year when we were playing off campus so we’re looking for even more support this year.”
The Fillies recorded a 9-5-1 record last year in their first year of competition. Games were played at the E.B. Hamilton Complex. This year all the home games will be played within easy walking distance of students living on campus. One set of bleachers will be available but fans are invited to bring their lawn chairs.
Development Director Melvin Merrill said the $1 million project was funded by the college and the ABAC Foundation. Jones Construction Company of Tifton built the complex. Merrill said future phases of the project will include a field house for the soccer field, seating, and lighting,
