GEORGE SCOTT DAY, JAZZ FESTIVAL AT ABAC APRIL 17

 

TIFTON - George Scott Day at Abraham Baldwin College, an annual Celebration of the Arts, and the 28th annual ABAC Jazz Festival will take place on April 17.  

The event, sponsored by the Humanities Division and the ABAC Music Department, is held each year as a tribute to George Scott, an associate professor of English at ABAC, who passed away in 1994.

  The Jazz Festival will be located on the front lawn of the ABAC campus from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Featured performances will include jazz bands from area high schools including Americus-Sumter, Colquitt County, Dougherty County, Henry County, Lowndes, Thomas County Central, Turner County, Valdosta, and Ware County.

Lunch will be available at a cost of $6 per person from 11:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. on the front lawn.  ABAC clubs and organizations will have information booths and activities throughout the day during the Jazz Festival.

The ABAC Jazz Ensemble will perform at 3:30 p.m. on the front lawn.  The 5 p.m. performance of the ABAC Jazz Choir will be in the Donaldson Dining Hall.

The Pegasus Literary Magazine awards ceremony and readings will be held from 10 a.m. –12:30 p.m. on the second floor of the Music Building.   The prose and poetry reading portion of the ceremony will take place from 11:15 a.m. until 12:15 p.m.

The ABAC Art Exhibit will showcase students’ artwork from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. on the front lawn of the campus. The Count Basie Jazz Clinic will be held at 4 p.m. in the dining hall. The 37th annual Lew Akin Speech Showcase will be held in the Cordell Conference Room from 5 – 7 p.m. A Frog Art Competition will take place all day at the Baldwin Library.

The Count Basie Orchestra will culminate the jazz festival at 7 p.m. in the dining hall.  A limited number of tickets for the evening concert are available at (229) 391-4945 or (229) 391-4950.  General admission for the concert is $15 for adults and $10 for students. ABAC students will be admitted free with ID.

All events, except for the Count Basie Orchestra, are open to the public and are free of charge.
