HISPANIC HERITAGE CELEBRATION AT ABAC OCTOBER 11

 

TIFTON- The offices of the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) and the High School Equivalency Program (HEP) at Abraham Baldwin College will hold a celebration on Oct. 11 in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month.

The celebration will take place from 2 – 4:30 p.m. at the ABAC Place Pavilion. The event will feature singing, traditional dancing, an historical perspective, presentation of the flags, Miss Fiesta del Pueblo 2006, and a dance competition for faculty and staff. It is open to anyone who would like to attend at no charge.

The celebration will open at 2 p.m. with a presentation by Joe Lewis, Vice Mayor of Tifton and a welcome address by ABAC President David C. Bridges.

Javier Gonzalez, Director of CAMP and HEP, will give an historical perspective on the importance of the independence of Latin countries at 2:20 p.m.

Jason Chapman, Student Government President, will speak at the celebration before the Latin dance performances by Sabor Latino, Energia Latina, and Folkloric Ensemble.

At 3:15 p.m., ABAC faculty and staff will show off their moves for a panel of student judges in the dance competition “Dancing for a Grade.” The celebration will conclude with singer and songwriter Ron Irizarry at 3:30 p.m. Irizarry has performed with artists such as NSYNC, Mandy Moore, Pink, and Sisqo.

This celebration is sponsored by ABAC Baldwin Library, ABAC Center for Multicultural Awareness, and local restaurants and merchants.

Hispanic Heritage Month runs from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. It commemorates the anniversary of five Latin American countries, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, receiving their independence. Mexico and Chile also gained independence during this time frame.
