WELCOME WEEK AT ABAC BEGINS AUGUST 22

TIFTON—Welcome Week 2005 is taking place at Abraham Baldwin College from Aug. 22 –26 as a way for all new students to get to know the campus and meet new people.

Bernice Hughes, Director of Student Life, said, “We wanted to put this week together because we want the students of ABAC to make connections outside the classroom, as well as inside.”

On Aug. 22 from 5:30 – 8 p.m., the college’s largest ever “Meet, Greet, and  Eat” activity will be held at the intramural field.  The two events scheduled on Aug. 23 are the gyroscope in front of Baldwin Library from noon – 3 p.m. and a seminar on getting good grades and time management in the Cordell Conference Room. Door prizes will be given away at the seminar.

A Multicultural Student Mixer is being held in the Donaldson Dining Hall at 7 p.m. on Aug. 24. Light refreshments will be provided, and all students are welcome to attend. In front of Conger Hall on Aug. 25 will be balloon and body art from noon – 3 p.m., followed by the ultimate dance party in Thrash Gymnasium beginning at 7 p.m.

The week’s events culminate on Aug. 26 with the Freshman Convocation in Gressette Gymnasium at 11 a.m. The speaker for the convocation is Dr. Rodney Bennett, the Vice President and Associate Provost for Student Affairs and Dean of Students at the University of Georgia. The President’s Picnic will immediately follow this event.

“These events are great opportunities to make friends and meet people from different backgrounds. We want the students to have a sense of home while at ABAC,” Hughes said.

This week of events is a collaboration between the Campus Activities Board (CAB), the Student Union, the Baptist Student Union (BSU), the Inter-Activities Council (IAC), the Minority Academic Social Development Association (MASDA) and the Student Success Community.  Welcome Week is planned to be an annual event for ABAC at the start of every fall semester.

“I anticipate a good response from the students. We hope this will introduce them to the activities on campus and let them know that they have a voice and to get involved,” Hughes said.

Fall term classes begin at ABAC on Aug. 22.
