ABAC FALL PICNIC AND CONCERT OCTOBER 13

TIFTON - The Annual Fall Picnic and Concert at Abraham Baldwin College will take place Oct. 13.  The picnic and concert are open to the public as well as ABAC students, faculty, and staff.

Sponsored by the ABAC Music Department, Music Educators National Conference (MENC), Sodexho Food Services and the Campus Activities Board (CAB), the picnic will be held at the gazebo located on the grounds of the new ABAC Place apartments from 11:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.

Sodexho Food Services is once again providing barbeque style foods, baked beans, corn on the cob, potato salad, cookies, and tea and lemonade at the cost of $5. ABAC students with a Gold or Silver meal plan will be allowed to use their plan with no additional charge.

Door prizes and complimentary chair massages will be furnished by CAB. Brandon Berger, an ABAC art student, will be drawing caricatures during the performance.

The Concert Band will perform a variety of contrasting selections from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s famous Broadway musical “South Pacific.”  Highlights from the famous musical will feature the following selections: Some Enchanted Evening, A Wonderful Guy, Bali Ha’i, and There is Nothin’ Like a Dame.

Karl L. King’s march, “The Trombone King”, Caesar Giovanni’s Capriccio of “Chorale and Capriccio” and James Curnow’s “Fanfare and Flourishes” will complete the concert.

“Overall, this performance will give the public a taste of our November concert,” said Eugene Wyles, Concert Band Director.

The ABAC Jazz Choir, directed by Dr. Susan Roe, will present several well-known pieces. The group will present a medley of Lorenz Hart and Kirby Shaw arrangements including Falling In Love, This Can’t be Love, My Funny Valentine and With A Song In My Heart.

The audience will also enjoy the old favorite, When I Fall In Love, and the swing classic It Don’t Mean A Thing If It Ain’t Got That Swing!

The ABAC Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Donald Coates, will perform sounds of swing, blues, and even a Latin samba. Performance pieces will include Blue Note, a composition that features Evan Zebley on tenor sax and Barry Coffee on trumpet. Nica’s Dream by Horace Silver will feature the rhythm section of the ensemble and Wyles on alto sax. The Lady is a Tramp will be performed by Adrian Rivers, an  ABAC music major. The final selection will be Frank Mantooth’s Slightly Out of Tune, featuring Zebley on tenor sax.

The Jazz Choir and Jazz Ensemble will also perform at the annual Sunbelt Agricultural Exposition in Moultrie on Oct. 19 - 20. ABAC’s Concert Band and Concert Choir will also perform for their annual fall concert in ABAC’s Howard Auditorium on Nov. 17.
