DANIEL WINS SPEECH
SHOWCASE AT ABAC
TIFTON—Anna
Daniel, a sophomore pre-vet major from Jackson, won the 36th annual
Lew Akin Speech Showcase at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College by delivering
a persuasive speech on Chinese adoptions. Daniel is a
Julie Lawhon, a sophomore early childhood education major from Tifton, finished in second place with her informative speech on the origin and success of reality television; and third place went to Eve Felton, an agri-business major from Tifton, on her persuasive speech regarding demolition of the old Howard Johnson motel.
The showcase is named for former ABAC professor Lew Akin and was established in 1969. Akin served as division chair of Humanities from 1975-1991.
The top speaker from each of the Communications 1000 and 1100 classes at ABAC participated in the competition. Twelve students competed in the initial rounds of the contest. Before the final round of speeches, there were three preliminary rounds. The top student from each preliminary advanced to the finals.
Each contestant delivered a five to ten
minute informative or persuasive presentation that was judged on such criteria
as content, organization, evidence, and eye contact.
Other contestants who participated in the
showcase were Scott Register, Shawn
Hurdle, Ronni Coarsey, Russell Taylor, Angela LoCascio, Tammy Lassiter, Bob
Canfield, Austin Moretz, Danielle Goff, Tania Zavala, and Tim Harris.
