BEN HILL COUNTY STUDENT TAKES SCIENCE FAIR TITLE

TIFTON--Lauren Davis from Ben Hill Middle School was the first place winner in the junior division (grades 6 - 8) of the Abraham Baldwin College Regional Science and Engineering Fair. The title of her project was “Will Pennies Clean in Juice?”

                        Kyle Williams from Lowndes Middle School won second place in the junior

            division for his project “Angles of Trajectory.” Both students received trophies.             

Nancy Brinson, the teacher of first place winner Davis received an award plaque. Amy Baker of Lowndes Middle School won the Suber Award for best junior division project in the field of entomology. She received a plaque for her project “The Real Mouse Bait.”

The American Chemical Society Award of a $100 savings bond for the best

chemistry project went to Blair Larimore from Lowndes Middle School. The title of her project was “Do Different Brands of Orange Juice Contain Different Levels of Vitamin C?” Her teacher, Kathy Blanton, received a year’s subscription to the Journal of Chemical Education.

 A total of 128 students from four counties (Lowndes, Turner, Colquitt, and Ben Hill) participated in the fair. ABAC Science and Mathematics Division Chair Ray Barber coordinated the event.

Ten students qualified for the Georgia Science and Engineering Fair (State Competition) in Athens on April 15 - 17. Qualifiers by county included Larimore, Amber Arnold, Lindsay Broome, Haley Rogers, Baker, and Williams of Lowndes; Micheal Coker and Tray Pearce of Turner; Christina Rogers of Colquitt; and Davis of Ben Hill.

Students by county who will serve as alternates include Brian Burdette of Turner; Stacie Pridgen and Elizabeth Tomlinson of Lowndes; and Jeffrey Smith and Katie Gordon of Ben Hill.
