ABAC BANDS TO PERFORM AT WORTH COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL

 

TIFTON - The Abraham Baldwin College Concert Band and Jazz Ensemble will perform on Nov. 22 from 2 - 3 p.m. at the Worth County High School Auditorium in Sylvester.

The ABAC Concert Band is under the direction of Eugene Wyles, part-time faculty member in the Division of Humanities. The band is made up of students from band programs from all over Florida and Georgia. Wyles is the former band director at Worth County High.

The program will begin with the “William Tell Overture,” from Rossini’s famous opera by the same name. Following this selection, the band will perform Frank Erikson’s “Toccata for Band.”  The next selections will be “Noble Men,” a march by James Henry Fillmore, and “The Music Man,” from Meredith Wilson’s famous Broadway musical.  The program will conclude with “Overture to Candide,” a musical by Leonard Bernstein. 

The ABAC Jazz Ensemble directed by Don Coates, Associate Professor of Music, will play a medley of styles from swing, to blues, and even a Latin Samba. Performance pieces will include “Cruisin” by Lennie Niehaus, “Blues for C.J.” by Bob Meyer, and “The Girl from Ipanema” arranged by contemporary composer Mark Taylor and featuring soloist Evan Zebley, a music major from Moultrie.

The ensemble will feature a piece from the big band era, “Jersey Bounce”.  The Jazz Ensemble will also perform Les Sabina’s “Brazil Nuts” to add variety with its Latin Samba.

 Featured soloists in the ABAC Jazz Ensemble are Gail Wyles, piano; ABAC students Evan Zebley, tenor saxophone; Derrick Dove, guitar; Nguyen Ly, alto saxophone; Gene Wyles, alto saxophone.
