ABAC NEWSPAPER SWEEPS SRPI AWARDS CEREMONY

The Stallion, Abraham Baldwin College’s student newspaper, recently secured first place wins in all of the two-year division categories of the 2002 Southern Regional Press Institute (SRPI) awards.

The newspaper won first place for Best Overall Newspaper. The staff won first place for Features. In individual categories, first place awards went to Jake Martin of Irwinville for Sports, Kristin MacKenzie of Fitzgerald for Editorials, and JD Sumner of Tifton for Best Photography. Sumner also won second place for Sports.  John Rodman of Tifton won second place for Photography.

ABAC’s newspaper also won several first place awards, including best two-year college newspaper, at the larger Georgia College Press Association (GCPA) conference in early February.

Eric Cash, Director of Student Media, said he is continually amazed by what ABAC students have accomplished.

“I am very pleased with the staff and impressed by the talent of the students in the journalism program, especially following their success at the GCPA awards,” Cash said. “While awards ensure state-wide recognition, the staff receives its greatest satisfaction by serving the ABAC community with each new edition.”

The SRPI awards cover the 2002 calendar year, which includes the spring and fall semesters of 2002.

The Spring 2002 staff included Nate Johnson of Tifton, editor; MacKenzie, news editor; Vickie Harsey of Ocilla, business manager and features editor; Caroline Kitchens of Ocilla and Martin; sports editors; Katie Davis of Tifton, entertainment editor; and Beth Phillips of Douglas, ad rep.
