ABAC BANDS TO PERFORM IN SPRING CONCERT APRIL 10

 

The Abraham Baldwin College Concert Band, under the direction of Eugene Wyles, and the Abraham Baldwin College Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Donald Coates, will present their annual spring concert on April 10 at 7:30 p.m. at the Tift County High School Performing Arts Center. The concert is free of charge to the public.

The ABAC Concert Band’s selections will include Claude T. Smith’s “Intrada” (Adoration and Praise), which is based on the hymn, “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty;” Henry Fillmore’s arrangement of the overture from the opera “Light Calvary” by F. Von Suppe; and a march by John Philip Sousa, composed in 1899 and edited by Frederick Fennell, entitled “Hands Across the Sea.” The concert band’s final selection of the evening will be Clifton Williams’ “Dedicatory Overture,” featuring the alma mater hymn of Evansville College contrasted with original material.

The ABAC Jazz Ensemble will perform a variety of selections featuring blues, swing, samba, bossa nova, ballads, and jazz fusion. Several students in the jazz ensemble will be featured as soloists. Amanda Richards, a sophomore music major from Tifton, will perform a medium swing tune, “Softly, as in a Morning Sunrise.” Jeremy Dye, a sophomore computer information technology major from Tifton, will perform a ballad entitled, “A Day in the Life of a Fool.” Several other soloists will also be featured during the concert.

The spring concert will be the last formal concert for the 2002-03 academic year for both the concert band and the jazz ensemble. For additional information, contact Coates at (229) 386-3094.
