PEDESTRIAN MALL DEDICATION APRIL 5

The dedication ceremony for the first phase of the Pedestrian Mall at Abraham Baldwin College will take place at 2 p.m. on April 5 as a part of the 2003 Homecoming activities.

The Pedestrian Mall is a 15-feet wide brick walkway through the center of campus that will eventually be lined with every tree, shrub, and flower native to the state of Georgia. Phase I of the project extends from the front of the Donaldson Dining Hall to the Environmental Horticulture Building.

“Our goal was to make it functional, aesthetically pleasing, and educational all at the same time,” landscape architect Stephen Rakestraw said. “But I have to say, it really has enhanced the overall beauty of the campus. That’s what you notice first.”

Director of Alumni Relations Nancy Coleman said families and individuals have purchased bricks, benches, lamp posts, and family seating areas on the Mall. She said these people will be recognized as the ceremony moves from in front of the Dining Hall to the grand opening of the fountain at the Central Plaza, located next to the Carlton Center.

“These areas reflect the fact that ABAC is a multi-generation school,” Coleman, who noted that seven different families have purchased seating areas, said. “Eighteen benches have also been purchased in memory of someone. Because of this, the Mall will be a tribute for years to come.”

ABAC President Mike Vollmer said the Mall should become a hub for campus activity, a place where students can gather, relax, study, and be with their friends.

“Even now in its early stages, I can tell the Mall is going to be a big hit for our students,” Vollmer said.  “Once we get all the landscaping completed, it’s really going to be a thing of beauty.”

Vollmer said the entire project will cost $1.5 million. Funding is already in place for Phase II, which began in February and will extend to the new Agricultural Sciences Building on Perimeter Road.  Eventually, the Mall will stretch from that building to the main parking lot on the south side of the campus.

Coleman said funding opportunities are available for families and individuals who are interested in honoring a loved one on the Mall. For more information, contact Coleman in the ABAC Alumni Office at (229) 386-3321.
