GEORGE SCOTT DAY SHOWCASES ARTS AT ABAC ON APRIL 15

The George Scott Day celebration at Abraham Baldwin College will take place on April 15 from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. on the front lawn of the ABAC campus between Tift Hall and Moore Highway. The event is sponsored by the ABAC Humanities Division and the ABAC Music Department. Scott was a faculty member in the Humanities Division. The day was named in his honor when he passed away in 1994.

One of the highlights of the day is a dinner and concert by Maynard Ferguson and his Big Bop Nouveau Band at 7:30 p.m. in the Donaldson Dining Hall. Ferguson has long been recognized as one of the premier trumpeters and big band leaders from 1950 to the present.

For additional information or to purchase tickets to the Ferguson concert, contact the ABAC Arts Connection at (229) 386-3558, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. General admission to the concert is $20 for adults and $15 for students. ABAC students are admitted free with student ID. Dinner tickets must be purchased by April 8. The additional cost for dinner is $15.

George Scott Day events will be held from 10:30 a.m. - 6 p.m. and include readings from Pegasus, ABAC’s literary magazine, the presentation of Pegasus awards, and a student writers’ conference. Musical events include performances by the ABAC Concert Band, under the direction of Eugene Wyles, and the ABAC Concert Choir and the Jazz Choir, both under the direction of Wayne Jones. The ABAC Saxophone Quartet and Clarinet Choir, both under the direction of Wyles, and the ABAC Sabor Latino Dancers will perform from 4:30 - 6 p.m. For additional information about George Scott Day, contact Don Coates, Chairman of ABAC’s Music Department, at (229) 386-3094.

The 24th annual ABAC Jazz Festival will take place along with George Scott Day. The Jazz Festival will feature performances by area high school musicians on the front lawn. Bands scheduled to perform include Appling County High School, Lowndes High School, Colquitt County High School, and Thomasville High School. The ABAC Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Coates, will perform at 1 p.m.

Meals will be served to the public from 11 a.m. - 1:15 p.m. and from 4:30 p.m. – 6 p.m. The cost is $5 per meal.

George Scott Day and Jazz Festival activities are free of charge; members of the community are invited to attend. In the event of rain, the George Scott activities will be held in the ABAC Chapel of All Faiths, and the Jazz Festival activities will take place in the Donaldson Dining Hall.
