GARDEN CLUBS DONATE PLANTS TO ABAC’S
PEDESTRIAN MALL
Garden Club members
from across the state brought a woody ornamental plant native to their area and
planted it along the Pedestrian Mall at
The Pedestrian Mall is a 12-foot wide brick walkway through the center of the ABAC campus lined with benches, lamp posts, fountains, trees, and flowers.
The donation is one of three projects that the State Garden Clubs of Georgia planned. Other projects included a litter pick-up on Moore Highway sponsored by the Georgia Department of Transportation and the planting of two magnolia trees at the new Annie Belle Clark Primary School.
Karen Hendrix and Genie McCook are co-presidents of the Tifton Council of Garden Clubs.
“Jaydee Akins Ager, President of the State Garden Clubs of Georgia, came up with the idea to give back to the community with these projects,” Hendrix said. “The project at the Pedestrian Mall is just one way to give back to ABAC for all the college has done for us.”
Stephen Rakestraw, landscape architect with Rakestraw and Associates, helped the Garden Clubs and ABAC organize the plant donation and will help with the planting.
“This plant donation will not only enhance the appearance of the Pedestrian Mall, but it will also serve as an educational opportunity for students and visitors to the ABAC campus,” Rakestraw said. “Each plant species will be identified and labeled. So, anyone who wants to learn about plants and their identification will benefit from visiting this plant identification area.”
