ABAC NURSING FACULTY/STUDENTS RECEIVE DISASTER TRAINING

Twenty-two graduating nursing students and six nursing faculty members at Abraham Baldwin College recently completed training in disaster health services, offered by the American Red Cross. This training will enable them to assist in a shelter or be deployed to a national assignment area during a state of emergency.

In addition to 22 students, ABAC faculty members who completed the training included Wanda Golden, Pattie Clark, Tami Dennis, Patricia Barber, Kitty Ray, and Robin Crumley. The instructor for the training was Helen Tilden, State Nurse Committee Chair for the American Red Cross based in Atlanta.

Laurie Vitale, Director of the Coastal Plain Chapter of the American Red Cross, said the American Red Cross plays an important role in disaster preparedness and response.

“The American Red Cross trains individuals to support their community and to take care of their own,” Vitale said. “Such training ensures that each county has qualified members who can be called upon to help in a disaster. Disasters such as Hurricane Isabel serve to remind us of the importance of disaster health services training and that preparation and training is an ongoing need.”

The American Red Cross offers disaster health services courses free of charge to the community. For more information about classes, call 1-888-382-3133.
