ABAC'S MONCRIEF TURFGRASS SCHOLARS SELECTED

The Georgia State Golf Foundation (GSGF) recently announced the names of six Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College students who will receive scholarships as 2002 - 03 Monty Moncrief Turfgrass Scholars.

Students who received scholarships and the amounts of the awards are as follows: Justin Young of Fitzgerald ($1,250); Derrick Davis of McDonough ($1,000); Justin Gates of Clayton ($1,000); Gina Williams of Adel ($1,000); Jeremy Anders of Brookfield ($750); and Jerry Heeney of Lake City, Fla., ($250).

Most of the scholars are candidates for the Associate of Applied Science degree in Golf Turf Management, Commercial Turf Management, Sports Turf Management, or Golf Clubhouse Management. Their goal is to obtain employment in the turfgrass industry after graduation.

Dr. Ed Seagle, professor of environmental horticulture in ABAC's Division of Agriculture and Forest Resources, said receiving this honor is definitely an asset to the students in terms of employment opportunities and networking with the industry through the associations.

"The scholarship money also assists them with their financial obligations while in school," Seagle said. "This year's recipients are excellent students, and they have identified their goals and objectives for their careers in the turfgrass industry. I commend each of them for their successes and wish them well."

The Moncrief Turfgrass Scholarships were founded in memory of Moncrief, a former Southeastern Director for the United States Golf Association Green Section, to fund turfgrass scholarships at ABAC and the University of Georgia. The Georgia Golf Course Superintendents Association, the Georgia State Golf Association, and the Georgia Turfgrass Foundation pooled their scholarship resources in order to make these awards possible. The GSGF has given over $55,000 in scholarships to ABAC turfgrass students since 1983.
