THOMPSON WINS SPEECH SHOWCASE AT ABAC

Jessica Thompson, a hospitality management major from Carrollton, won the 33rd annual Lew Akin Speech Showcase at Abraham Baldwin College by delivering a persuasive speech on funeral home scams.

Marcia Huggins, an early childhood education major from Fitzgerald, came in second place with a persuasive speech on reading aloud to children.

Every section of ABAC's Human Communication classes (COMM 1100) was represented in the competition, with the best speaker in each class performing in the competition. Before the final round of speeches, there were two preliminary rounds. The top three students from each preliminary advanced to the finals.

Each contestant delivered a five to ten minute presentation that was judged on such criteria as content, organization, evidence, and eye contact.

Sheila Hughes, ABAC's Director of Forensics and Assistant Professor of Communication, coordinated the showcase.

"This was an excellent speech forum," Hughes said. "We had 11 outstanding speakers in the preliminary rounds, and the competition was very close. It was a tough decision for the judges."
