A $500 scholarship will be awarded annually to a student enrolled in ABAC's Nursing Program. Preference will be given to students with financial need who show determination and dedication toward their education. The ABAC Scholarship and Awards Committee will select the recipient each year from the applications received based upon recommendations from the faculty in ABAC's Nursing Division. To continue receiving the scholarship, the student must maintain a cumulative Regents' grade point average of 2.5 or higher.
The scholarship was created by family members to honor the memory of June Bennett Lindsey. The family members responsible for this new scholarship include Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Bennett of Tifton (June's parents); James Lindsey of Tifton (June's husband); Cynthia Lindsey of Tifton and Renee Lindsey Winter of Roswell (June's daughters); Carolyn Pilkinton of Tifton and Milva Knight of Waycross (June's sisters); and Jack Bennett of Tifton, Ray Bennett of Oglethorpe, and Nick Bennett of Port St. Lucie, Fla. (June's brothers).
Lindsey was a graduate of Tifton High School and Georgia Baptist School of Nursing in Atlanta. Her family credits her cousin, Ret. Capt. Charles W. Pittman, Jr., USN of Winter Haven, Fla., for making the initial donation that led to the creation of the scholarship.
Knight said this scholarship is an appropriate tribute to her sister.
"Her first love was nursing, and she had a nature of taking care of others," Knight said. "This is a great way of keeping her memory alive, and she deserves this memorial. We think she would be pleased to see a scholarship in her honor that will help students pursue and fulfill their dreams of becoming nurses."
ABAC Foundation President Melvin Merrill said the Foundation is honored that the family chose to create a scholarship at ABAC as a lasting tribute to Mrs. Lindsey.
"This scholarship will not only benefit the students but also the communities they will serve," Merrill said.
