ABAC FACULTY AND STUDENTS WORK

AT GOLF TOURNAMENT

Abraham Baldwin College horticulture professors Dr. Ed Seagle and Jimmy Felton along with 11 turfgrass students recently worked at the USGA's 2001 Walker Cup Golf Tournament at Ocean Forest Golf Club at Sea Island.

Seagle supervised the students as they raked bunkers, repaired divots, and whipped greens throughout the matches. The students earned valuable tournament experience and had an opportunity to meet some golf course superintendents from around the nation. ABAC alumnus Fred Theus is the golf course superintendent at Ocean Forest.

"ABAC's participation in the 2001 Walker Cup was indeed an honor," Seagle said. "To assist as volunteers was the opportunity of a lifetime. To observe the best amateurs in America competing against the best amateurs from Great Britain and Ireland was truly an experience. The students will remember this event throughout their careers."

In attendance at the tournament were former President George Bush, former Attorney General Griffin Bell, and golf pro Davis Love, III.

The Walker Cup began in 1922 to stimulate interest in golf on both sides of the Atlantic with players from Great Britain and Ireland competing against the United States. It is played bi-annually and rotates between the countries. Great Britain and Ireland won the matches at Ocean Forest.
