PACESETTERS NAMED AT ABRAHAM BALDWIN

Thirteen individuals at Abraham Baldwin College recently received Pacesetter Awards from campus newspaper editor Bo Moore. A Superior Pacesetter Award was awarded by Eric Cash, Director of Student Media.

The college's award-winning student newspaper, The Stallion, extends Pacesetter recognition every year to those who have worked for ABAC through their actions and exemplary service. Pacesetters are chosen from the student body, the administration, the faculty, and the staff.

This year's Pacesetter Awards went to Jay Berryman, Rebecca Canaday, Shelley Dominy, Scotty Funderburk, Phyllis Kester, Pam Leonard, Katrina Mack McCrae, Dr. Larry McGruder, Shawn McRae, Lisa Redfield, Jason Smith, and Mary Spurlock. A Superior Pacesetter Award went to Randy Carter.

Berryman, a business administration major from Athens, is a veteran baseball player for the Stallions' baseball team. He returns to the team this year as a second-year starter.

Canaday, an undeclared major from Moultrie, defines what it means to be a great student. As a Distinguished Honor Student, Canaday has served as a tutor in the Academic Assistance Center (AAC) and as editor of Pegasus, ABAC's literary magazine. She is also the recipient of the Behavioral Science Divisional Discipline Award in the Division of Social Science.

Funderburk, HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) technician at the Physical Plant, began working at ABAC in August 1992. A dedicated worker, his position requires him to be on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Kester, senior secretary in the Office of Learning Support, is in her third year as a member of the ABAC staff. In addition to her other responsibilities, she also administers placement and exit exams to students.

A Willacoochee native, McCrae received her bachelor's degree from Brewton Parker College and her Master of Science degree from Georgia Southern. She is now completing her second year as an instructor of General Biology and Micro-Biology.

McGruder, a professor in the Division of Social Science, has been an ABAC faculty member for 17 years. He was the recipient of the Donaldson Award for Teaching Excellence in 2000. McGruder was also appointed to the committee that chose the current Chancellor of the University System and has served on two ABAC Presidential Search Committees.

Shawn McRae, a public safety officer, began working in his present position in April 1998. According to Moore, he always carries out his responsibilities objectively, thoughtfully, and fairly.

Redfield, a psychology major from Tifton, is an active and energetic honor student. She tutors in the AAC and serves as the Vice President of Phi Theta Kappa. She is also involved with Pegasus and maintains a job in addition to attending school. Redfield was the recipient of the Spanish Divisional Discipline Award.

Smith is also a member of the ABAC AET, and the Cattleman's Association. He participated in the Mr. ABAC competition. He plans to teach high school agriculture and work on the family farm.

Spurlock, a business information technology major from Moultrie, became an ABAC student in the spring of 1999, and during the summer term began working as a scribe for a physically challenged student. She also works as a tutor in the AAC and recently won the prestigious J.G. Woodroof Scholar Award as the top academic student at ABAC.
