OWEN WINS SPEECH SHOWCASE AT ABAC

Marcus Owen, an accounting major from Tifton, won the 32nd annual Lew Akin Speech Showcase at Abraham Baldwin College by delivering a persuasive speech on smoking.

Nick Morris, an agricultural management major from Monticello, came in second place with a persuasive presentation on the myth of rodeo cruelty. Other finalists included Lynn Brown, a landscape design major from Moultrie; Rebecca Harrison, a journalism major from Omega; Susan Manders, a psychology major from Vienna; and Jason Satterfield, an agricultural/business management major from Canton.

Every section of ABAC's Human Communication classes (COMM 1100) was represented in the competition, with the best speaker in each class performing in the competition. Before the final round of speeches, there were two preliminary rounds. The top three students from each preliminary advanced to the finals.

Each contestant delivered a five to ten minute presentation that was judged on such criteria as content, organization, evidence, and eye contact.

Sheila Hughes, ABAC's Director of Forensics, coordinated the showcase.

"The showcase provides an opportunity to highlight the best speakers from our communications courses," Hughes said.
