Hatcher gives credit to her physical therapist, Butch Jenkins, who pushed her to place all of her weight on her broken leg. With proper instruction, she learned how to maneuver and take steps. Jenkins also set the wheels in motion for a scooter for Hatcher, which allows her to travel from class to class.
"I was committed to returning to teaching, and I wanted to be capable of meeting the daily challenges," Hatcher said. "I love teaching.; it fuels my life. Therefore, I wanted to return to work as soon as possible. In my opinion, my classes are not only challenging mentally and physically, but they are also expediting my recovery."
Dr. Bettie Horne, ABAC's Vice President and Dean of Academic Affairs, said she is not at all surprised that Hatcher is already back at work.
"All of us who heard her last spring in an academic presentation she made when applying for the position were swept off our feet by the spirit of this dynamic, hard-working, and inspiring professional," Horne said. "She 'hit the ground running' at ABAC last fall and immediately began making changes in the art program that provided support for her students' artistic efforts. I love her spirit and admire her dedication."
Hatcher is very grateful to her ABAC friends and said everyone at the college was really supportive.
"The calls, cards, flowers, and gifts provided much needed healing energy," Hatcher said. "Students and teachers were often the highlight in those first dismal days after the accident. Dr. Erin O'Neill, Chair of the Humanities Division, amazed me as she handled every administrative detail with complete compassion. Without her help and support, my quick return to ABAC would have been more difficult. Dr. Horne's care packages arrived week after week during my recovery. Her notes always brought a smile to my face and inspired me a great deal. All of these kindnesses let me know just how fortunate I am to be a part of the ABAC Family."
This semester, Hatcher is teaching two Art Appreciation classes, an Art History I class, a Three Dimensional Design class, and a painting class. Hatcher began teaching at ABAC last fall.
