Dr. Leon Benefield, professor of biology and former chair of Abraham Baldwin College's Division of Science and Mathematics, recently retired after 27 years of service to the college.

Benefield, who began his ABAC career in 1973, said he is enjoying his retirement and is looking forward to traveling with his wife, Caroline, as well as doing volunteer work.

"We plan to travel to Australia and Singapore," Benefield said. "We are also going to spent more time managing our family farm in Selma, Ala. I also want to do a variety of volunteer work."

Benefield said he is proud of the work he did at ABAC and the contributions he made, especially his involvement in the Science Olympiad and his promotion of technology. He is also pleased that he was able to bring Macintosh computers to the campus for use in the Science and Mathematics Division.

Working at ABAC has been a wonderful experience, Benefield said.

"ABAC has been marvelous," he said. "The college has always supported me and my family. Tifton is a wonderful community. I couldn't have asked for a better place to raise my kids. Also, the people in my division were a wonderful group of people. I really enjoyed working with them."

Benefield has two daughters, Sarah, an account executive with Spectacular Events in Atlanta, and Carrie Henderson, an environmentalist with Radian Corporation in Austin, Texas.
