ABAC RECEIVES FUNDS FOR BASEBALL FIELD LIGHTING

College baseball at night is coming to Tifton. Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College recently received funds in the amount of $50,000 from the Governor's Discretionary Fund for baseball field lighting.

ABAC President Mike Vollmer said the money will be used to provide state-of-the-art lighting for Stallion Field, which currently has no lights. The construction of the lighting is scheduled to occur simultaneously with that of the Red Hill Athletic Center, and it is hoped the lights will be installed by spring of 2002.

State Representative Newt Hudson, an ABAC alumnus, played a major role in the approval of the funds for the project along with Senator Rooney Bowen, Representative Austin Scott, and Representative Ray Holland.

"I think this grant is only the beginning to help ABAC catch up, not only in athletics, but also in academics," Hudson said. "ABAC has had a long tradition of providing excellent academic and athletic opportunities for its students. This project will only enhance these opportunities."

Vollmer said the college is grateful for the legislative support and appreciates the assistance in getting the funds for this project approved.

"Newt's long standing leadership in the Georgia General Assembly was of tremendous help in making this important project a reality," Vollmer said. "Once again, ABAC has enjoyed the support from both our local and state leaders."

Alan Kramer, Director of Athletics and the men's tennis coach, said the Division of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation is very excited about the project.

"The lighting of our baseball field will heavily impact our athletic programs tying in nicely with the Athletic Center that is currently under construction," Kramer said. "Night games will certainly increase spectator numbers and provide exciting entertainment for everyone at ABAC and in the Tiftarea community."

Steve Janousek, ABAC's Head Baseball Coach, also expressed his excitement about the addition of the lights.

"I think the addition of the lights, along with the new athletic complex, will serve as a great tool for recruiting," Janousek said. "The lights will also eliminate the need for scheduling games early in the day, meaning that students will miss less class time. I believe this is one of the most important advantages of having lights on the field."
