VALDOSTA TECHNICAL INSTITUTE DONATES

PINE BARK TO ABAC

Valdosta Technical Institute recently donated 38,000 pounds of pine bark to Abraham Baldwin College. This material is used primarily as mulch around shrubbery to keep down weed growth and to hold in water.

Mike White and Eddie Garner, commercial truck driver instructors at Valdosta Tech, delivered the pine bark to ABAC.

ABAC Director of Procurement Margaret Brogdon said she is pleased that Valdosta Tech decided to donate the pine bark to ABAC.

"I think that the donation is great for the college," Brogdon said. "I used to work at Valdosta Tech, and I became good friends with many people there. It is very generous for Valdosta Tech to make this donation to ABAC because there are so many other colleges that they could have donated to, and they chose ABAC."

Lori Felton, assistant professor in the Division of Agriculture and Forest Resources, said she is very thankful for the donation.

"I use the pine bark in my classes for teaching purposes," Felton said. "Students learn to calculate how much mulch goes into a flowerbed, and it really helps if they can actually see the amount. If they can see it, then it is not such an abstract concept. Students also help arrange the mulch, which helps beautify the campus."

Last year Valdosta Tech donated a truckload of potting soil to ABAC.
