Anyone interested in history, especially the Dark Ages, may be interested in attending a display of "living history" on Nov. 13 from 10 - 11 a.m. in The Meadow (between Bowen Hall and the Music Building) at Abraham Baldwin College.

The event, which is sponsored by the Division of Social Science, will feature artists Joe Piela and his wife, Carol Ann Ham, who specialize in re-creating Europe's Dark Ages (600 - 1100 AD). The production includes a display of Piela's best work, a short video, music, and a "living history" demonstration of fighting techniques employed by many warriors of the era. It is open to anyone who would like to attend at no charge.

Piela said he and his wife both have a love of and interest in history and enjoy performing historical re-enactments.

"Historical re-enactment is the closest thing to time travel," Piela said. "It is a lot of fun to make swords, armor, and clothing just like those that were used hundreds (or thousands) of years ago. Taking part in a simulated battle where numerous people are dressed and equipped in a period fashion is a unique and awe-inspiring experience."

Dr. John Dunn, Assistant Professor of History at ABAC, said this display is a great chance for students to learn about the past in a novel format under the guidance of experts.

"The Pielas will give students a chance to step back into the Dark Ages and get a real sense of how different that time was from our own," Dunn said. "This is a chance for them to meet a family who simultaneously lives in our world and that of 1,000 years ago."

Piela, descended from a family of Polish blacksmiths, is a master of metal arts. His speciality is the authentic reproduction of ancient arms and armors. A full-time businessman since 1990, Piela currently lives near Albany, where he operates his business, "The Lonely Mountain Forge." He is a former member of the Society for Creative Anachronism and a current member of "The Vikings" (England's Norse Film and Pageant Society).

Ham is a craftsperson with a Master's degree in English and Latin and a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Ohio University. She is currently employed as Director of Student Success at Darton College.
