Dr. Homer A. Day has been appointed the interim president at Abraham Baldwin College, effective Aug. 1. Dr. Stephen Portch, Chancellor of the University System of Georgia, said Day will serve until a new president is selected to replace Dr. Harold Loyd, who retired July 31.
Day presently serves as Director of College Services and Coordinator of Federal Programs, responsibilities he has held since 1990. He joined the ABAC staff in 1972 as the Assistant Director of Financial Aid. He has served as the Director of the Cooperative Education Program, Director of the Career Planning and Placement Center, Director of Financial Aid and Veterans Services, Assistant to the Academic Dean, and Interim Vice President and Dean of Academic Affairs.
"I plan to take the foundation established by Dr. Loyd and use it as a catalyst to carry the institution where the faculty, staff, and other support elements want it to go," Day said. "Plus I want to capitalize on any opportunities that may arise during this time."
A Willacoochee native, Day received his B.S. degree in General Science from Savannah State College, his M.S. degree in Guidance and Counseling from Fort Valley State College, and his Ed.D degree in Higher Education Administration and Supervision from Auburn University. He taught in the Tift County Public School System before joining Abraham Baldwin.
Day was selected for the Regents Administrative Development Fellow program in 1986-87 when he served for nine months in the Office of the President at Georgia Southern College. The program gave him an insight into budgets, promotion policies, and executive planning.
A past president of the Tifton Rotary Club, Day currently serves as chair of the Tifton Housing Authority and on the Tifton-Tift County Chamber of Commerce Education 2000 Committee. He is also a member of the Tiftarea Adult Education Coalition and the Tift County Community Health Committee.
Day's wife, Caroline, is a counselor at the Northeast campus of Tift County High School. They have two children, Sean, a graduate of the United States Naval Academy, and Sherri, who recently completed her graduate degree from the University of California at Berkeley.
